A Rule Against Murder

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Louise Penny, 2008

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache #4

I was totally engaged in this book for a couple of reasons beyond the usual Gamache spell.

Readers are invited into the deeply disturbing backstory of two ‘regulars’ who live in Three Pines: artists Peter Morrow and his wife Clara, also an artist. That backstory includes one of the most thoroughly unredeemable characters I have ever read, and Peter’s weaknesses are exposed in the process.

Additionally, readers are given a larger glimpse into Armand Gamache’s childhood and his relationships with both his father and his son. Penny is the master of the slow tease, and you will not want to put this book down until you reach the end.

Narrated by the excellent Ralph Cosham.
