Theodore Roethke: “The Waking”
Theodore Roethke was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan, as was I. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School, as did I. The poem is read twice here, first by Mr. Roethke and again by Gavin Parker. If you’d like to learn more about Mr. Roethke, visit this website to start: Friends of Roethke. The museum, which I presume is the poet’s childhood home, is on Gratiot between Brockway and Wheeler – not even a mile from my childhood home. I would have walked or driven past it frequently on my way to Arthur Hill – walking in his footsteps.
Enjoy the reading.
